“To everything, turn, turn, turn.  There is a season, turn, turn, turn. And a time to every purpose under heaven.” –Turn! Turn! Turn! (The Byrds)

Change is in the air – in more ways than one! Yesterday was the first day of fall in the Northern hemisphere. This means that summer is over…no more sitting out soaking up the sun, no more days at the beach, no more heading out the door somewhere at the last minute with wet hair (knowing it’ll be mostly dry by the time you get there). While seeing summer leave makes me a little sad, there are many things I love about this time of year: the leaves changing colour, the crispness in the air, and harvesting the food from my garden. For me, a change in seasons always feels like a time of new beginnings. It’s the perfect time for letting go of what needs to go and creating space for what wants to come into your life.

Last week, some people very near and dear to me did exactly this when they packed up and moved to the other side of the country. I could look at it as a bad thing – an end to their time here in Nova Scotia (at least temporarily anyway). Or I could be excited for them and encourage them to celebrate! This is a new chapter in their lives, and I think there’s always something to look forward to with a new experience. What will unfold is unknown – just as it’s unknown what would have happened if they didn’t go. At some point, afraid or not, you have to take a leap of faith, trust yourself, and go where your heart is leading you.

“And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.” ~Meister Eckhart~

Your own new beginning might not involve a move across the country. It might be leaving that soul sucking job you’ve hated for the last ten years. It might be spending more time (quality time) with your partner because your relationship matters to you. It might be ditching the diets that don’t work and just focusing moment to moment on eating healthy – on eating things that make you and your body feel good. It might be finally taking that piano lesson or planning that vacation to Paris. Whatever change it is that you are craving, trust me, you CAN create it! If you have the courage to say goodbye to what’s not working, you will undoubtedly be greeted with a beautiful, fresh and joyous new start.

How do we know when it’s time to make a change? I recently read this article which has a lot of great insights as to 005when it’s time to move on. In a nutshell, it’s time to move on when you FEEL like it’s time to move on! When something about your life is consistently unsatisfactory, you need to make a change in the way you are living or in the way you think about your situation. Stop looking at the potential, and get in touch with your reality. You have to let go of the idea that your past dictates your future. It doesn’t. You get to choose. You can accept where you’re at, or you can do something different; there is always an opportunity to switch direction. Every moment brings a second chance – the promise of something new. Every day is full of hopes and dreams that can happen. Every morning we all begin again, and life becomes what we make of it. What will YOU create?

“Every day is a new beginning. Stay away from what might have been and look at what can be.”
